Our Story: Developed by a Doctor to Solve a Real Problem

SleepPhones was founded in 2007 by Dr. Wei-Shin Lai, a family physician, and her husband, Jason Wolfe, a video game developer. Dr. Lai found herself struggling to fall back asleep after taking stressful, late-night patient phone calls. She wanted to listen to calming audio to relax, but traditional headphones were too bulky, and hard earbuds pressed painfully into her ears when she laid on her side.

Finding no suitable solutions on the market, the husband-and-wife duo decided to invent their own. They hand-sewed the very first prototypes at their kitchen table, matching flat, high-quality speakers with a soft fleece headband.
